This August marked the 11th Annual Gabe’s GROM Contest, a free surf event that has become a tradition for St. Augustine Beach. What started as a small idea has grown into one of the area’s favorite community gatherings, drawing more than 100 young surfers each of the last few years.

How It Started

The contest began in 2009 when Gabe, then a professional surfer was home recovering from an injury, he wanted to share his love of surfing with local kids. His goal was to create an event where kids could experience the excitement of a surf contest free of costs in a supportive setting.

About Gabe

Gabe grew up surfing in St. Augustine before competing around the world. He spent more than 15 years as a professional surfer, including time on the Championship Tour from 2007–2011, and earned wins at major international events such as the Nike Lowers Pro in California and the Billabong Pro in Japan. He also ranked as high as 3rd overall on the World Qualifying Series. After retiring from the tour, he returned to St. Augustine, where he is raising 3 boys (with me 😍) and now works as a Broker Associate at Endless Summer Realty while staying closely connected to the surf community.

The Contest

The GROM Contest is open to surfers ages 15 and under, with divisions ranging from “push-in” beginners to advanced amateurs. The mix of first-timers and experienced groms creates a unique lineup where kids encourage one another and gain confidence in the water.

Why It Matters

The contest isn’t just about results—it’s about giving kids the chance to be part of something bigger. For some, it’s their first time paddling into a wave. For others, it’s a competitive surf event. Either way, the day highlights the connection between surfing and the St. Augustine community. More than anything, it shows how our community comes together—families, local businesses, and volunteers all working side by side to support the next generation of surfers!
