Our Turf Installation with Southern Turf Co.

I think we got more engagement on our backyard turf installation with Southern Turf Co. than any other home project! I get it, outdoor living is such a huge part of the Florida lifestyle. So, in honor of all of your interest and inquiries, I decided to do a full post answering all of the most asked questions.

First, in case you missed it, we started off with a dirt pit next to our pool. We tried to sod the area twice but both times we ended up with dirt. With a big beautiful shady oak tree and 3 boys, real grass in that area of our yard just didn’t stand a chance. All that was left was dirt and some weeds. The boys would come inside covered in dirt, the dirt would get in the pool and when the dirt mixed with rain or wet feet from swimming, it quickly became mud. Mud on the pavers, mud in the house, mud on their clothes. It was maddening and if I am being real, I also couldn't stand the look of it.

Over the past 5 years, we have put so much time into the design of the yard and creating a functional space for our family yet we had this dirt pit that made it feel smaller, unusable in that area and messy. We started researching artificial grass in hopes of getting rid of the dirt and maximizing the functionality of our yard. Of course having it be green and aesthetically pleasing all year long sounded very good to me!

We met with our turf advisor from Southern Turn Co. about 3 weeks ago. Tessa was super knowledgeable about the process and all of the turf options. She provided us with samples and she was very helpful with finalizing the design of the space. We selected our turf and within a few hours after our consultation, she sent us over the quote. Southern Turf Co.’s customer service was superb, from start to finish, pricing was transparent, they communicated in a timely manner, the crew worked meticulously and the finished product truly exceeded our expectations! We are so happy, it really has made such a difference in the aesthetic and functionality of our yard. Our yard even feels bigger!

Ok, let's get to the nitty gritty and answer some questions.

Q:How much does it cost?

A: Pricing depends on turf selection, design of the space and how much prep work is involved. Typically, a professional residential installation ranges from $11-$17 a square foot.

Q: How big was the area in your yard?

A: The area where we installed turf was around 650 sqft. That side of the yard is actually closer to 950 sqft but we are adding a skate ramp and our turf advisor helped us to include landscaping and mulch in the design so that we could stay within our budget.

Q: Is it pet friendly?

A: Southern Turf Co. offers a pet turf that is non-toxic and allergen free and soft on their paws. It’s durable yet perfectly safe for your pet! As part of the installation, Southern Turf Co. lays down high-quality infill that is antimicrobial and helps to reduce odors and bacteria.

Q: How does it handle rain?

A: Installation includes a complete turf system that takes drainage into account. The turf also has a backing made to drain even more quickly than natural grass.

Q: Does it get hot in the summer sun?

A: We have not experienced it through the hot summer yet but this was also a concern of mine. Southern Turf Co. let us know that on the hottest of days, the artificial grass will be roughly 10% hotter than natural grass, but not as hot as concrete. If needed, a quick rinse with hose will cool it down.

Q: What is the maintenance?

A: No mowing or watering! Which means a big water savings and less impact on the environment. Any debris or messes on the turf can be easily cleaned with a mix of vinegar and water. Synthetic grass also reduces the need for fertilizers or weed killers which can be harmful to your family, pets and the environment.
